Userland

Perfectl00p at Insula

DOMVS and Rome New Media Week present, at Galleria INSULA, inside MAM – Media Art Museum, Userland: five new works by the US artist Perfectl00p, from 6 November to 6 December 2026, in collaboration with AOTM (Art of This Millennium). It is the gallery’s first solo exhibition.

The exhibition opens on Friday 6 November 2026 at 19:00, at Galleria INSULA, MAM – Media Art Museum. Perfectl00p builds his images from the parts of the computer everyone once used: dialog boxes, cursors, folders, Minesweeper, MS Paint. These are not private memories but a shared language that a whole generation learned before it learned to type. In computing, userland is where ordinary programs run.

In Keep Climbing, a figure made of cursors climbs a staircase of network dialogs, while the wall behind it repeats that the password is incorrect: the user, always climbing, never logged in. In Spill, a Minesweeper window can no longer hold its own game, and its tiles pour out and pile up on the ground. In Plexus, the windows of MS Paint fold into a cube around a shape drawn in the program’s own colours. In Sk8, a pixel skateboarder grinds along a rail of README files. In The Source, a figure made of icons walks toward a glowing door, between streams of globes and folders.

Perfectl00p‘s loops are built like music, with rhythm instead of narrative. Each work has its own screen, and none alternates with the others. Keep Climbing stands alone on an 85-inch screen, its staircase at the height of a person. Plexus plays on four household cathode-ray televisions stacked in the corner, the kind of screen its windows were first drawn for.
