Krishan: Cloudy with a Chance of (2023)

This is the final work I will be making public from my 2023 residency at the Toledo Museum of Art. This story of this one is quite interesting:

My first days in Toledo were a whirlwind of settling in, made easier by the exceptional kindness of the museum staff. In particular, one gracious woman, who constantly looked out for me, brought her son, Krishan, to visit one afternoon.

We quickly fell into conversation, and I learned Krishan was preparing for a football game against a school rival. The moment he conceded that the other team was technically better, my artistic instinct flared. In his voice and in his worried eyes, I saw a beautiful, tense duality: the acknowledgement of the odds paired with an unyielding will to fight.

I immediately knew I had found my next subject for a portrait. I had to capture that perfect, fleeting moment of poised determination. His team may have lost the match, but I was forever inspired by the magnificent spirit he showed leading up to it.
